NSF 527: Personal Care Products is designed to support product transparency, label accuracy and ingredient safety
NSF, a leading global public health and safety organization, today announced the launch of NSF/ANSI 527: Personal Care Products, a new certification designed to substantiate the quality of finished personal care products and the safety of ingredients used in cosmetic, personal care and topical over the counter products.
NSF/ANSI 527 is being introduced as consumer expectations continue to rise around product transparency, safety and label accuracy, while manufacturers and brands navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment. The standard provides a science-based framework to help validate product integrity, substantiate content claims and build trust with customers.
Consumers are paying closer attention to what they put on their bodies, and they want more clarity and confidence in the products they buy. NSF/ANSI 527 helps brands and manufacturers demonstrate product quality and ingredient safety through independent, third-party certification, while giving consumers a clearer way to identify products that have been evaluated against defined requirements.
said David Trosin, Senior Director, Nutrition and Wellness at NSF.
NSF/ANSI 527 is based on global testing protocols and recognized methods developed by ISO, the European Commission, Health Canada and the U.S. FDA. It is intended to exceed typical industry norms and support manufacturers and brands as product-related claims receive increasing scrutiny.
The certification can apply to a range of personal care product categories including, but not limited to, moisturizers, cleansers, shampoos and conditioners, serums, perfumes, makeup deodorants, oral hygiene products, and other topical OTCs. Certification is available globally for manufacturers and brands seeking independent verification of product quality and ingredient safety.
Key features of NSF/ANSI 527: Personal Care Products include:
- Product safety evaluation to help substantiate finished product quality and ingredient safety
- Ingredient review and verification to support product integrity and transparency
- Label and claims review to help validate on-pack statements and label accuracy
- GMP verification, including acceptance of ISO 22716 GMP or NSF/ANSI 455-3
- Quality testing for microbiological contaminants, metals, known adulterants and physical properties
